During the week of the 2021 NBA Draft Combine, the Chicago Bulls looked to get a good number of interviews and workouts in. Granted, in terms of the players that the Bulls actually worked out, they seem to be lagging behind most of the rest of the league. The Bulls have interviewed quite a few players at this point, but they haven’t worked out many that are known in the public eye.
Really the only prospects that it seems like the Bulls have worked out at this point are St. John’s forward Julian Champagnie and Alabama guard Josh Primo. It also sounds like the Bulls are set to work out the former Texas Longhorns senior center Jericho Sims later this week.
But between the amount of prospects that the Bulls front office and scouting department interviewed since the start of the 2021 NBA Draft Combine, there looks to be more clarity now for their draft board. Yet another prospect that the Bulls reportedly interviewed last week in the midst of the combine was the former Virginia Cavaliers and Rice Owls junior forward Trey Murphy.
Chicago Bulls have reportedly interviewed former Virginia and Rice F Trey Murphy
The Durham, NC, native and Cary Academy product Murphy also reportedly interviewed with the Philadelphia 76ers along with the Bulls last week. He could be a pretty potent prospect for the Bulls either as a second-round draft prospect or an undrafted free agent signing, depending on what happens for him on draft night next month.
The 6-foot-9 and 210-pound Murphy is one of the more switchable wings/forwards in this draft class. Despite his lengthy 6-foot-9 frame, he can play at the two-guard if need be. A good tertiary ball-handler with a pretty well-rounded game in general, Murphy could be a value pick with a high floor in the second round.
During his junior campaign at Virginia (also his first in Charlottesville), Murphy averaged 11.3 points per game, 3.4 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.4 blocks. And he shot 50.3 percent from the field, 43.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 92.7 percent from the free-throw line.
The 2021 NBA Draft is set to take place on the night of July 29. The only pick that the Bulls hold in the 2021 draft comes in the second round, 38th overall, since they lost out on their lottery pick to the Orlando Magic last week.
