The news of the 2021 NBA Draft Combine workouts and interviews keep dropping this week concerning the Chicago Bulls. And one of the latest interesting ones for who executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley find some appeal in is the former Texas Longhorns senior center Jericho Sims.
With a plethora of former Longhorns big men getting attention throughout this draft scouting process, Sims should not be forgotten. He was a stud for the Texas frontcourt in the shadow of a lot of other NBA-caliber bigs coming off the Forty Acres the past few seasons.
Chicago Bulls get to workout underrated former Texas center Jericho Sims
For a good while, Sims sat behind lottery-caliber big after lottery-caliber big with the Longhorns under former head coach Shaka Smart. He’s seen big-time talents with the Longhorns roll through such as New Orleans Pelicans center Jaxson Hayes, Orlando Magic center Mo Bamba, and even power forwards Greg Brown and Kai Jones this season.
But the time for Sims to get his own spotlight has averaged. He will reportedly work out with the Bulls in the middle of next week, and had a great showing at the 2021 NBA Combine. That is all great news for the draft stock of the underrated former Texas upperclassmen.
Sims isn’t likely to fall off the board by the 38th pick in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft. But he could be a good potential undrafted free agent signing to watch for Karnisovas and the Bulls this summer.
Last fall, the Bulls got a good value undrafted free agent signing in the former Kansas Jayhawks star point guard Devon Dotson. Sims could provide a similar amount of value possibly for the Bulls this offseason.
Sims was good for Texas during his junior and senior campaigns, in a starting role for the frontcourt for the most part. He averaged roughly nine points per game, eight rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block, over the past two seasons for Texas.
The 2021 NBA Draft is set to take place on the night of July 29. And the Bulls only hold one pick this year in the draft since they missed out on the top four in the lottery earlier this week, sending their first-round pick to the Magic.
