The 2024 NBA Draft is as wide open as any in recent memory and the Chicago Bulls could go in a number of different directions depending on the course they chart this summer.

If the Bulls decide some form of running it back with the same team, then it might make sense to trade the pick for proven help or go for a prospect who is more NBA ready.

Of course, if the Bulls decide to rebuild, they should just go for the best player available, as even an unknown draft can yield a future star in the lottery.

One publication thinks the Bulls will go the first route by choosing a player who is ready to step into an NBA role and help them chase the playoffs. And there are rumors that they may have already made this player a promise.

Chicago Bulls draft: Devin Carter

According to The Ringer, one team in the lottery has already made a promise to draft Devin Carter and they speculated that team may be the Chicago Bulls.

I should add that this is mere speculation as there was no evidence offered for this claim.

If the Bulls are that team, does Devin Carter make sense?

Devin Carter draft profile

Of all the players in the 2024 NBA Draft, Devin Carter is considered the player most ready to help a team now. That doesn’t mean he’s the best prospect, but he has skills that should translate immediately.

Carter can score and knock down 3-point shots at a high rate. He’s also a quality on-the-ball defender who hustles and has toughness, all qualities the Bulls could use.

He’s a nice fit with Coby White, as Carter can thrive on or off the ball and provide high-end defense against the other team’s best perimeter players.

Some of his weaknesses as a playmaker would be negated by White and Carter does other things well that would help the Bulls.

He averaged over eight rebounds per game last season as a guard to go along with his 19 points and 37 percent from long range on high volume. Carter is already 22 years old, so he has some experience and should be able to play right away.

Carter may not be the sexiest pick, but Bulls fans would love his heart and that he plays with a little swagger with creative finishes around the rim and getting out in transition.

There’s no telling if the Bulls were the team to make a promise to Carter, but he does make sense as a prospect if Chicago wants more of a sure thing with a lower ceiling but a higher floor.
