Chicago Bulls: 3 most realistic point guard targets this summer

This list does go in order of the most realistic point guard targets for the Bulls to find (starting with free agency) this summer. Executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley don’t have the most fruitful point guard market in free agency this offseason, but it’s not the driest either.

There are worse selections that the Bulls could have in free agency with this position group.

Nonetheless, a good spot to start this list off is with the Los Angeles Lakers 27-year-old 6-foot-3 and 175-pound point guard Dennis Schroder. While signing Schroder wouldn’t be my personal favorite move for the Bulls, it is one that is certainly a large possibility. Schroder is likely to get some looks this offseason to be a starting point guard elsewhere if he decides to leave the Lakers.

Schroder wouldn’t necessarily be a huge upgrade for the Bulls over second-year point guard Coby White or combo guard Tomas Satoransky. Schroder shot worse from the field and from beyond the arc compared to Sato. And he shot worse from downtown compared to White. He also isn’t the best perimeter defender among point guards that are impending free agents.

What Schroder would bring to the table for the Bulls is more of a winning pedigree than someone like Sato or White. He’s played for championship-caliber teams before, despite not having a ring to his name thus far. And even though he isn’t a huge upgrade on defense, he is a better perimeter defender than White.

Schroder should be considered an option at point guard for the Bulls as more of an insurance policy than anything else.
