Chicago Bulls: 5 free agents that must be avoided this offseason
Chicago Bulls free agents they must avoid this summer: DeMar DeRozan
DeRozan is one of the most talented players that will be available in this year’s free agency class. In terms of fit, he would actually slot in quite well alongside the Bulls all-star duo of LaVine and Vucevic.
There are a few reasons that he still isn’t worth pursuing for the organization, though. First and foremost, he would eat into Williams minutes. At this point, Williams long-term development is one of the most crucial parts of the Bulls returning to contender status in the NBA.
Going from a low playoff seed to the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference is not worth doing at the price of valuable minutes for the team’s young wing. Especially when the player being brought in will be 32 years old by the time next season rolls around.
If it wouldn’t cost them such a big amount of their cap it might be worth considering. Still, DeRozan’s inability to stretch the floor along with his need for the ball in his hands works against him.
He won’t get it done on the defensive end and next year the Bulls would be better off with P-Will in their lineup than DeRozan, in terms of defense only. DeRozan will likely wind up somewhere closer to contending or will be paid a massive deal by a team farther away from contention.
The Bulls need to stay in between the two types of teams that will be making runs to acquire his services. The dynamic offensive player he can be is not of value to this Bulls group that lacks in so many other ways. The front office must pass on another scorer like DeRozan.
