It was recently reported that Trae Young will decline his player option with the Washington Wizards and enter unrestricted free agency. That opens up a perfect trade opportunity for the Chicago Bulls. As teams look to clear up space to sign Young, they could look to dump contracts. The Bulls should take on those contracts.
As Chicago navigates its offseason plans, it will have more space than any other team in the NBA. The Bulls aren’t going to be a title contender next year. So, they might as well be willing to take on large contracts in exchange for draft capital. This summer should be a summer of trades in Chicago.
And the recent Young report could open up a whole new avenue for the Bulls to make said trades.
Bulls could help a team sign Trae Young by trading for bad contracts
Obviously, the Bulls could look to spend some dough in free agency. There are some interesting players they could look to sign to help their new young core moving forward.
At the same time, this summer could be a great opportunity for the Bulls to add to their draft cabinet. Teams may be willing to give up draft capital in order to get off some bad contracts.
Take the Denver Nuggets, for example. They want to retain Peyton Watson in restricted free agency this summer. In order to do that, they will need to trade some other guys.
Players like Aaron Gordon, Cameron Johnson, and Christian Braun could be on the chopping block in Denver, and it may be worthwhile for the Bulls to trade for one of them if the Nuggets are willing to throw in a draft pick.
But that’s just one example. There may be a bunch of teams who could be willing to complete a similar move this summer, and the Bulls will have the cap space to make it happen.
So, let’s take it back to the Young news. Now that he will be a free agent, there will undoubtedly be plenty of teams that want to offer him a contract.
But some teams may not have the space. They may need to dump contracts in order to clear up enough money to make a legitimate run at Young in free agency. That’s where the Bulls could come into play.
If the Bulls got a draft pick back in the deal, they could take on some bad money from teams looking to target Young. That would be a worthwhile endeavor for Chicago.
At this point, the Bulls need to think about their future. And though taking on big contracts may seem like a brutal reality in the short-term, the draft picks they could get back would make it all worth it.
