According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Detroit Pistons have made Isaiah Stewart available in trade talks. They are looking for extra shooting and playmakers, likely trying to optimize the offense around Cade Cunningham. That’s good news for the Chicago Bulls because Stewart could be a very intriguing target for them.
Right now, the Bulls have the worst center rotation in the NBA… in the sense that they don’t have one. Guerschon Yabusele and Nick Richards are both free agents, leaving the Bulls center-less. Stewart could be a very intriguing addition, should the Bulls decide to target him, as his defensive abilities would give Chicago a solid infusion of intensity.
The question is, could the Bulls actually land him?
Bulls should trade for Isaiah Stewart this summer
The Pistons flamed out in the second round of the playoffs this year. They were eliminated in the second round, losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a seven-game series.
A big reason they failed to advance any further – and why they struggled mightily in both rounds they played in – was their lack of offensive support for Cunningham. The Pistons just didn’t have enough.
So, as they search for answers this summer, they will be considering a lot of different trade ideas. That means putting some players on the trade block. Stewart is one of those players.
In the case of Chicago, it may be hard to get Stewart, because the Pistons likely want to trade his salary ($15.0 million) for an offensive upgrade, using Stewart to add a high-salary guy.
They could combine Stewart’s salary with the likes of Duncan Robinson and Caris LeVert to land a star-caliber guy. That’s the probable path Detroit will go down this summer.
But if that team doesn’t want Stewart, then the Bulls should jump at the chance to bring him on board. He could be the perfect take-a-chance piece for Chicago’s center position.
Stewart was one of the best bench bigs in the league this past year, and his defense was wildly underrated. Plus, with how young the Bulls are, it would be nice to have an enforcer-type player around.
And the contract is pretty solid, too. Stewart will make $15.0 million next season and has a $15.0 million team option the year after that. So, if the Bulls decide they want to move on, they can decline the team option. He’d also be a tradable piece for them at the deadline next season.
He’s definitely a guy the Bulls should take a chance on.
