Josh Giddey has an emerging trade market, and the Bulls have a big decision now

Is there a major Bulls roster change on the way during the 2026 NBA offseason?

Seemingly out of nowhere, Bulls guard Josh Giddey is generating a trade market for his services.  The first demand signal originated from the Twin Cities when reports disclosed that the Minnesota Timberwolves had expressed interest in acquiring Giddey.  Up next are the Phoenix Suns, who, according to Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype, have initiated background research on Giddey.

The potential rising trade demand for Giddey immediately adds a new context to the Bulls' agenda for their 2026 NBA Draft nights.  Perhaps there is a draft night deal the Bulls can quickly arrange that ships out Giddey for a return that advances the Bulls' rebuild in terms of draft picks or players that fit the shared vision of Bulls lead front office executive Bryson Graham and head coach Tiago Splitter.

What would be a worthwhile Bulls return from the Suns to acquire Josh Giddey?

The Suns are not the most asset-rich NBA franchise, given the aggressive roster moves the franchise executed in recent seasons to acquire top-heavy salary veterans like Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal.

Perhaps the best possible trade return the Bulls could acquire from the Suns would be a package of Jalen Green and an unprotected 2033 Phoenix first-round draft pick in exchange for Josh Giddey and Jalen Smith.

Jalen Green is owed $36.3 million for the 2026-27 NBA season and a $36 million player option on the final year of his contract for the 2027-28 NBA season.  Jalen Green definitely falls into “good bad money” territory at age 24.  The risk in acquiring Green is that he may never level up his trade value from his status quo as a one-way offensive player with a streaky jumpshot.

Green shot a painful 42.2% from the field and 31.3% from the three-point line during the 2026-27 NBA season.  Also, Green’s defense leaves plenty to be desired.  Overall, the Phoenix Suns may be an interested party in acquiring Josh Giddey.  However, if the Bulls receive a trade offer from the Suns, they will need to decide if that offer represents the best value they can receive for Giddey.

It’s quite possible the Bulls should wait out a Phoenix Suns trade offer for Giddey to see if there are stronger returns the Bulls can obtain if they decide to deal their starting point guard. Alternatively, the Bulls could easily do nothing and carry the offseason Giddey trade due diligence conversations to the 2027 NBA trade deadline to obtain a better deal.
