Every Batman needs their Robin. But for the Chicago Bulls, they’ve been lacking a strong 1-2 punch, particularly on the offensive end.
However, the Bulls may have achieved this by pairing Caleb Wilson with Matas Buzelis.
How this can happen
In more of a starting role in 2025-26, Buzelis thrived in year two. His points per game almost doubled from year one to year two. His 1.5 blocks per game in 2025-26 show that he is a contributor on the defensive end as well.
Based on his improvement, it is fair to believe that Buzelis will have an even better year three. With Buzelis, the Bulls already have a young player who is impactful on both ends.
And then, insert Wilson, another player who impacts the game on both ends - one who does so extremely well.
Wilson had an incredible summer league. He averaged 23.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.3 steals per game. He shot 50% from the field and 41.9% from three.
If Wilson performs as he did in summer league, and Buzelis continues to grow, they could be a great 1-2 punch on both ends of the floor.
Why this is needed
The Bulls need to be a better offensive and defensive team. Nobody last season showed that they were the player or players that could be counted on at a high-level on a night-to-night basis.
Buzelis and Wilson can give the Bulls two offensive and defensive stars to rely on. Fans may now have two players to count on who can step up when needed.
Let’s even go back to the DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine days. As great as those two guys were on the offensive end, especially DeRozan, they were not great on the defensive end.
With their scoring, those two received starting roles and lots of playing time. However, think about the defense sacrificed because of that.
With Wilson and Buzelis, there should never be this type of problem. With those two, fans will see both offensive and defensive production.
But be gracious with these two
Norman Powell will require offensive opportunities. And as high as the expectations fans have for Wilson are, he is still a rookie.
Give Wilson some breathing room to figure things out. Give Wilson and Buzelis time to play with each other before coming to a conclusion about their ceiling together.
And remember, it isn't about who is the No. 1 or No. 2, but rather the competition they give each other in practice and how they help make the other better.
When working together, these two can be extremely impactful, bringing hope back to Chicago.
