Caleb Wilson and Matas Buzelis can work together if the Bulls focus on physics

The rapid ascension of Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson into the NBA summertime zeitgeist has created reasonable speculation of what the Bulls offense will look like during the 2026-27 NBA season once Wilson takes the floor with forward Matas Buzelis.

While there should be a healthy amount of competition between Wilson and Buzelis to fuel their respective development as NBA players, there also shouldn’t be any doubt about the ability of the Bulls’ young wing tandem to co-exist, provided Matas Buzelis makes a concerted effort to boost his movement shooting contributions in his third NBA season.

In a social media posting by the ALLCITY Network’s ALL NBA Podcast, Buzelis was recognized as a medium-tier movement shooter among NBA players who attempted 100+ relocation and catch & shoot three-point attempts during the 2025-26 NBA season.  

For additional context, Buzelis is overwhelmingly a catch & shoot three-point shooter who rarely took a contested three-point shot attempt in the 2025-26 NBA season.  Buzelis 36.5% on 5.0 catch & shoot three-point attempts per game (while only shooting 1.3 pull-up three-point attempts per game) during the 2025-26 NBA season, according to NBA.com stats

Judging by Caleb Wilson’s sensational summer league performance, he should be the Bulls wing that makes heavy use of his pull-up game from behind the three-point arc, and additionally should get a green light to take (and ideally make) contested jump shots to build a scouting report reputation to draw two defenders to him on the ball.

Wilson's ball gravity should be the catalyst to enabling Buzelis to crank his movement shooting to new volume thresholds by attacking the space Wilson creates with the ball in his hands.

Actualizing Matas movement shooting

The concepts to improve Buzelis’ movement shooting, to create the ideal running mate for Wilson, are simple.  Bulls fans should expect to see Buzelis run Iverson cuts on the regular as a device to manipulate opposing defenses into rotation.  

Ideally, the Bulls should also boost the presence of off-ball screening in their offensive possession to create actions that get Buzelis to a clean spot for catch & shoot three-point attempts.  

Given the ample number of non-shooters on the Bulls roster, like Nic Claxton and Isaac Okoro, there should be a great opportunity ahead to turn these players’ shooting weakness into a team offensive strength by using them as screeners off the ball.  

Most importantly, ball reversals, passing the ball side to side is another important element the Bulls should lean on heavily to keep an opposing defense in rotation to expose good shot opportunities for Buzelis or Wilson.
