The Chicago Bulls are entering a new era. New front office, new franchise centerpiece in Caleb Wilson, and a new direction. With that, they should go into the year open to changes. And one of the changes should have to do with Josh Giddey. Chicago needs to either build around his weaknesses or move on from him and find a better lead creator.
Giddey is a good playmaker, but not quite good enough to make up for his deficiencies. He’s not a good defender, and on the offensive end, his floor-spacing is brutal. Behind the three-point line, Giddey isn’t a threat, and teams don’t have to really guard him. When you combine all of those issues, it’s a tough mountain for the Bulls to climb when it comes to building around him.
So, unless the Bulls are fully committed to putting an absolutely perfect roster around Giddey, they should seriously consider moving on from him.
Bulls may be better off moving on from Josh Giddey
For the last couple of years, Giddey has been one of the best players on the Bulls roster. But being the best player doesn’t always mean building around a player is particularly easy.
Some top players are much easier to build around than others. And in the case of Giddey, it’s hard. Since he can’t really defend or shoot, it’s hard to put great pieces around him, because they’d have to make up for those problems.
Not only that, but considering Giddey’s best asset is his playmaking, he’s not an incredible playmaker by any means. Just take a look at this stat recently posted to social media.
The two-man action of Giddey and Nikola Vucevic was the least efficient pairing in the entire NBA last season when it came to picks and hand-offs (among the top 50 in total actions run, per the All NBA Podcast).

Giddey is a talented player. Objectively so. But he’s not good enough at his niche skill sets to make up for the parts of his game where he struggles most, and that’s bad for the Bulls.
Chicago needs to focus on building around Caleb Wilson and Matas Buzelis. Those are their two focal points moving forward. And Giddey may be too hard to build around to be the Bulls’ long-term point guard.
Figuring out a way to make up for Giddey’s lack of defense and three-point shooting could prove too difficult for the Bulls.
They may be better off just moving on from him.
