According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Chicago Bulls have just hired Tiago Splitter to be their new head coach. Splitter was the interim head coach for the Portland Trail Blazers last season, leading them to a Play-In birth and, ultimately, the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference.
Charania noted the following when it came to the hiring: “The Bulls landed on Splitter due to his ability to lead the team’s player development, organizational alignment on the franchise's direction and vision, and his leadership and knowledge base as a coach rising through the ranks since 2018 as well as a seven-year NBA player with one championship with the San Antonio Spurs.”
From that perspective, Splitter is the perfect guy to help guide Caleb Wilson into the future.
Tiago Splitter hire is perfect for Caleb Wilson
The Bulls are projected to select Wilson with the No. 4 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft if everything pans out the way it’s predicted to. He looks like the type of guy who could lead the franchise for years to come.
Considering that the Bulls hired Splitter to lead player development and organizational alignment, it seems like a move made to give Wilson the best possible chance to succeed.
Wilson projects to be a two-way star. He’s an elite defender who can create his own shot on the other end of the court. An elite prospect in every imaginable way.
Pairing Wilson alongside Matas Buzelis (and whoever Chicago picks at No. 15) will give the Bulls a great foundation to work with. And now, they have the right man to lead that foundation.
Splitter’s work in Portland this past year was very impressive. After just one game, Chauncey Billups was removed from his head-coaching position, and Splitter had to step in at a moment’s notice.
From that point forward, the Blazers looked good. Obviously, they were only a Play-In team, but they outperformed many of the expectations that were laid in front of them.
Deni Avdija made his first All-Star team, Shaedon Sharpe and Donovan Clingan improved, and by the playoffs, even Scoot Henderson was flashing his potential.
It’s clear that Splitter is good at developing young talent. Getting the most out of young players and helping them start winning at a higher level than they were before.
That’s what the Bulls need. And perhaps just as importantly, that’s what Wilson needs. Because if the Bulls want to succeed, they need Wilson to succeed. Splitter can help with that.
