Bulls may end up repeating Thunder's Josh Giddey trade if Caleb Wilson pans out

If Caleb Wilson turns into a superstar, the Chicago Bulls could end up trading Josh Giddey.

The Chicago Bulls will have a chance to select a potential franchise star this month if all goes their way. Caleb Wilson of North Carolina should be there at pick No. 4, and he has the potential to be a superstar. If that pans out, the Bulls may end up trading Josh Giddey for the same reason the Oklahoma City Thunder did: For a better fit.

Giddey is a solid player. An elite ball-handler. An impressive passer. An offensive organizer. But at the end of the day, with his lack of three-point shooting and defensive chops, he’s not exactly the perfect guy to be a top player on a title team, which is where Chicago wants to get.

So, if Wilson ends up being the guy who can help lead them there, then a Giddey trade may be in the Bulls’ future.

If Caleb Wilson turns superstar, Bulls may end up trading Josh Giddey

The Thunder had a roster crunch a few years ago. They still do now. But someone had to go. They needed to make a move to help solidify their championship core. Giddey was that guy.

OKC traded Giddey to the Bulls in a straight-up swap, getting back Alex Caruso. Nowadays, Caruso is one of the most important pieces in the Thunder’s lineup. An elite defender and clutch three-point shooter, especially in the playoffs.

The Bulls took a chance on a young player (and in hindsight, they probably should have gotten (way) more for Caruso), and Giddey looks like a solid piece for them now.

But if Chicago wants to win a championship, then it might end up in a similar position to the one the Thunder found themselves in with Giddey not too long ago.

At the end of the day, a player like Giddey is only good enough to win a title if they are a generational talent. And from the look of it, Giddey just isn’t that.

Wilson? Maybe. The jury’s still out. Well, technically, the jury hasn’t even been selected yet because Wilson still hasn’t even been selected. But he has the potential.

But if Wilson blossoms into the type of star who can lead the Bulls to the promised land, then they may end up making a Giddey trade to add a guy who fits alongside him a bit better. Their very own Caruso, perhaps.

Because for as talented as Giddey is, he just doesn’t really fit the makings of what it takes to win a championship in today’s NBA.
