Trade deadline targets the Chicago Bulls were smart to avoid: Dennis Schroder

Another one of the more notable trade deadline targets that the Bulls appeared to be connected to ahead of Feb. 10 was the former Boston Celtics point guard Dennis Schroder. The idea of the Bulls trading for Schroder at the deadline was one that got a lot of the fans in Chicago up in arms.

Anytime the Bulls are mentioned in connection with Schroder, it appears to draw a very polarized reaction from this fan base. The negative reactions to the Bulls potentially pursuing Schroder are often at least somewhat warranted, though.

Last offseason, the Bulls had some much more prominent point guard targets to go after on the free agent market than Schroder. And that’s why they pulled off the deal to get point guard Lonzo Ball from the New Orleans Pelicans instead of signing Schroder.

And then, the Bulls looked to have some other better options to work with at the trade deadline this year instead of adding depth to their backcourt unit by way of getting Schroder from the Celtics.

When it came down to it, though, it didn’t look like the Bulls were as interested in Schroder as they were once made it out to be in the days ahead of the deadline. This wound up being the case as the Celtics would send Schroder off to the Houston Rockets for the return of big man Daniel Theis.

The Celtics also sent centers Enes Freedom and Bruno Fernando to the Rockets on deadline day.

That wasn’t necessarily all that expensive for the Rockets to get Schroder from the Celtics. But it looks more evident than ever that Schroder could be bought out in the weeks to come. If the Bulls still have any intention to sign Schroder, do it once he hits the buyout market.
