Former DeMar DeRozan teammates the Chicago Bulls could look at in free agency: Ed Davis

At the outset of the free agency negotiation window on Aug. 2, it looked like a potential backup big man that could be signed on a short-term minimum deal that presented a low amount of risk was a very realistic move for the Bulls. That’s what made someone like the well-traveled veteran center Ed Davis such a viable option for the Bulls.

But now that the Bulls have signed Bradley and brought over Simonovic from Europe to join the roster heading into next season, it seems like bringing someone like Davis into the fold is less likely.

One reason does still exist, though, as to why the Bulls could sign Davis. The Bulls are rather cap-strapped at this point of this cycle of free agency. Davis could be signed on one of the cheapest deals among any of the big men left on the free agent market. And the Bulls still need some depth help at the four.

Davis is more of a traditional five, but he has played a significant amount of minutes at the four in his career to date. It would be a clunky fit for the Bulls to have two offensively limited big men like Davis and Bradley out on the floor together at once.

But putting Davis out on the floor with a big like Simonovic that can space the floor more effectively could work out well. Davis can put the ball on the floor from more than five feet from the rim. But his game starts getting more limited outside of 10-12 feet from the rim.

Davis was a teammate of DeRozan early in both of their careers with the Raptors in the early 2010s. This could be interesting if they were reunited with the Bulls.
