Chicago Bulls: St. John’s F Julian Champagnie will work out for the team
With the Chicago Bulls already having missed out on the 2021 NBA Draft Lottery, which was expected, on the night of June 22, the focus now turns to what to do with their second-round pick. The lone draft pick that the Bulls hold at this point is 38th overall in the second round. There is still the possibility that they move up or down in this draft, but that doesn’t look too likely at this point either.
This is now the time where the Bulls front office/scouting department start to really form their big board together with workouts and the 2021 NBA Draft Combine looming large. The draft combine is set to take place later this week in Chicago. And individual prospect workouts will also start to get scheduled in the coming days and weeks.
And one of the early draft workouts that the Bulls have scheduled at the moment is with the former St. John’s forward Julian Champagnie. The other team that Champagnie is reportedly set to work out for after the draft combine, besides the Bulls, is the Brooklyn Nets.
Chicago Bulls and Nets set to have workouts with Julian Champagnie
There are certain outlets that actually list the 6-foot-8 and 220-pound sophomore New York native Champagnie as a guard. But he would likely fit more of a hybrid two-guard/wing role at the next level were he to come anywhere close to that classification. He definitely isn’t a point guard that just has the size like Cade Cunningham of the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
A good amount of switchability that Champagnie brings to the table coming out of St. John’s can be put to the test throughout this draft scouting process. He has excellent physical tools, but his athleticism and burst aren’t really anything above average.
Where Champagnie makes up for that is in almost every other area of his game. He’s a good wing defender and shooter from deep. His strength also still gives him the ability to jostle his way through the lane to get to the rim.
The draft workout process for Champagnie could really decide if he winds up solidifying the status of a late first or early second-round pick in this class. He certainly has the capability to have that high of draft stock, but he’s one of the lesser-known wings in this class from a major or mid-major conference school.
The 2021 NBA Draft is set to take place on July 29, but the Bulls won’t be picking in the first round. And the 2021 NBA Draft Combine is already underway in Chicago, lasting through June 27.
