Chicago Bulls offseason targets to help Billy Donovan in Year 2: Spencer Dinwiddie

As the Bulls try to find that elusive solution to the point guard problem, it looks like Lonzo will be the front office’s top target of the summer. But if Karnisovas and the Bulls aren’t able to get Lonzo signed down out of restricted free agency this offseason, then a good backup solution exists by potentially signing or trading for the Brooklyn Nets standout point guard Spencer Dinwiddie.

The Nets are looking like real NBA Championship contenders behind their trio of superstars in point guard Kyrie Irving, guard James Harden, and forward Kevin Durant. They did suffer a setback at the hands of Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks in their second loss of the postseason thus far on June 10. But it still looks like the Nets have that series in hand.

Moreover, with all of the superstar talent the Nets have on their roster, Dinwiddie might find himself with a much smaller role heading into next season. He has an impending player option that he could exercise to return for another year in Brooklyn this offseason, but that’s not too likely to transpire if he wants an elevated role heading into next season.

There’s also the possibility that the Bulls could pull off a trade with the Nets to get Dinwiddie for the final year of his current contract. That possibility seems like a route worth exploring for all parties involved too.

As far as the fit with Donovan and the Bulls is concerned, Dinwiddie could give a true primary facilitator of the offense in the starting unit, as long as he’s able to recover well from the unfortunate season-ending knee injury he suffered just prior to the turn of the calendar year.
