Chicago Bulls offseason targets to help Billy Donovan in Year 2: Josh Richardson
Upgrading the backcourt rotation alongside the likes of LaVine and second-year point guard Coby White is a key looming task for the Bulls front office this offseason. Especially if they decide to let go of veteran shooting guard Garrett Temple and/or shooting guard/wing Denzel Valentine this summer, as they’re both impending unrestricted free agents, depth will need to be restored in this part of the rotation.
The Bulls also have the potential to trade either White or combo guard Tomas Satoransky this summer if that means making room for a true point guard solve for the starting unit.
With that in mind, the Bulls will definitely need to consider their options for bolstering some key parts of the backcourt rotation. That includes finding a solidified backup in the backcourt rotation for LaVine. This is where the Bulls could pursue someone like the former Philadelphia 76ers and current Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Josh Richardson in free agency.
While most teams that Richardson has played for so far in his career had him in the starting unit, he could still serve a lot of value in a second unit reserve role heading into next season. The Bulls would have to see how much it would cost them in free agency to get Richardson as essentially a third guard in this rotation.
But it would be hard to beat for the Bulls to have a backcourt rotation that featured a top four with someone like Dinwiddie or Lonzo, LaVine, White, and Richardson. That would be a dream scenario, but Richardson would help deepen the rotation and provide a true defensive boost for this bench unit.
If Richardson does opt out of the final year of his current contract, it is worth seeing if the Bulls are interested in what he brings to the table.
