Chicago Bulls Point Guard Fits: Alex Caruso, Los Angeles Lakers
Ranking ahead of Dinwiddie is the much stronger fit for the roster, guard Alex Caruso. Although not the same caliber player as the other best fits for the Bulls, he comes in at third due to how he would fit and the reasonable contract he could be signed for.
Caruso wouldn’t break the bank and would ensure the Bulls have future flexibility with their cap when needed. That is important considering the money Vucevic makes and the contract LaVine is set to get in the near future. By signing a player in Caruso’s range, the Bulls would have the opportunity to give big money out in future years still. The guard has shown he can make a difference on a championship team.
His potential fit on the roster is very strong. Caruso is a defensive-minded guard that brings exactly what White doesn’t to the team and would cover up for current weaknesses on the roster. He changes the game on the defensive end and has shown he can be a game-changing support player on the right team.
By wreaking havoc on the defensive end he creates transition opportunities for his team and his effort tends to bring energy to the players playing alongside him. Additionally, he can be asked to shadow the game’s best scorers and he will do so effectively. The Bulls would benefit greatly from a defensive asset like Caruso in the backcourt.
While his playmaking is not great that can be overlooked if the team makes moves that are expected already. If Lauri Markkanen isn’t retained, Thaddeus Young could very well work his way into the starting five. He’s an excellent playmaker at the four and could lead the Bulls starting unit in a playmaking by committee approach. Young, LaVine and Vucevic are all willing and capable passers that will find the open man.
Finally, White would almost certainly be able to get the majority of minutes at the point guard spot which would be awesome for his development. Caruso would be a tone-setting defensive pest that is only a starter in name.
