2. LaMelo Ball, Point Guard
Usually the consensus top overall prospect in this draft class is considered to be the talented two-way 6-foot-7 point guard LaMelo Ball. Spending his year leading up to the NBA Draft playing overseas in the NBL with the Illawarra Hawks, Ball did prove how capable he was as a defender, rebounder, and facilitator. He’s just an all-around playmaker with the ball in his hands.
Questions do still largely remain concerning his off-ball defending effort and shooting efficiency. LaMelo suffers from the same problem as his brother, and New Orleans Pelicans point guard Lonzo Ball, with the inconsistent shooting percentages and fundamental issues. Shooting mechanics can be fixed, but it won’t be easy.
Theoretically LaMelo should be a really good fit along with shooting guard Zach LaVine. Ball would take a lot of the responsibility off of LaVine’s shoulders in terms of being a primary scorer and ball handler in this offense. He could also makeup for any defensive plays where LaVine is lagging behind on the perimeter.
There is a lot of versatility to what the Bulls could do if they landed good enough pick in this draft lottery to be able to nab Ball. Other lottery teams like the New York Knicks and Timberwolves would likely love to be able to get their hands on Ball. A trade is certainly another door that could open in this situation.
