Chicago Bulls: Ranking the last 10 first-round picks
By Luke Askew
3. Wendell Carter Jr.
- Draft year: 2018
- Pick: 7
Wendell Carter Jr. has all of the tools needed to be one of the best starting centers in the NBA. On defense, his IQ is incredible, he moves his feet well, and he protects the rim. On offense, he has good vision, a solid shooting stroke (which he rarely uses) and above-the-rim finishing ability. He’s also an impeccable rebounder on both offense and defense.
The only thing missing from his game right now? He needs to look for his shot more. Some of the blame can fall on the Bulls’ coaching staff. Maybe they aren’t encouraging him to shoot enough. But most of this falls on Carter. He needs to be a threat from the outside so defenses are forced to guard him. Right now, when he catches the ball in the mid-range or behind the 3-point line, the opposing defense just collapses, leaving little-to-no spacing for the Bulls’ offense to move.
Carter has incredible upside — he just needs some help unlocking his game.
