Believe it or not, UCLA was more than just Lonzo Ball shooting from 30 feet out and throwing passes that only he would think to attempt this past season.
(No, it wasn’t just LaVar Ball yelling outlandish things with no sense of logic or reason and then charging people almost 500 dollars for a pair of bad shoes.)
Ball had the spotlight, but T.J. Leaf had a season to remember during UCLA’s run to the Sweet 16 where the Ball hype train was slowed by a determined De’Aaron Fox and the Kentucky Wildcats.
Leaf, who measured in a little shorter than I personally expected at a shade under 6-foot-9 at the NBA Draft Combine, could be an insurance policy for the Bulls if Nikola Mirotic isn’t brought back next season.
What to like:
There’s a lot to like about Leaf and it’s because of his offensive game. He didn’t shoot too many of them (1.7 3-point attempts per game, 58 attempts), but Leaf shot 46.6 percent from long range in his one season out west. He’s also not afraid to put the ball on the deck and attack the lane. He’s not an overly strong guy and it shows on the defensive end, but he has four-man/small ball five written all over him.
If the Bulls do lose Mirotic and/or Cristiano Felicio this summer and look to build their front court depth back up, Leaf could be an option.
