On Thursday, the Chicago Bulls announced their Las Vegas Summer League roster which includes Dez Wells. The list was expanded to 13 players, including several players who are expected to play a significant role for the Bulls now and in the future along with a handful of longshots and D-League bound fringe ballers.

The Bulls will play at least five games in Las Vegas between July 9 and July 18 and the Bulls have won their first two games, beating the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers..

A lot of people may be familiar with names like Bobby Portis, but not everyone knows players like Aleksandar Marcius. Over the next few days we will give you the 4-1-1 on each of the players on the Bulls roster for Summer League.

Who: Dez Wells
Position: Guard-Forward
Age: 24

Background: Wells was a four-year college ball player. His first season was at Xavier. After allegations were brought against Wells for an off-court issue, he transferred to Maryland. Wells also fought back against the claims, going as far as filing a lawsuit against Xavier for false allegations. Putting his first season behind him, Wells went on to have a rather successful career with the Terrapins. He progressed each season and finished his senior year with an impressive shooting line of 46.4 percent for field goals and 51 percent from 3-point range. The 3-point shooting was a career-high for his collegiate playing days, though the 2-point shooting was a career low during his senior campaign. He also averaged 15.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists during that 2014-15 senior season.

Dez didn’t take a year off from hoops after finishing up at Maryland. He spent 2015-16 playing with the Oklahoma City Blue, which is the D-League affiliate of the Oklahoma City Thunder, after going undrafted in 2015. While with the Blue, Wells shot poorly from distance, but did see 29.3 minutes per game in 24 appearances for OKC. His stat line was 12.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists during his single season in the D-League.

Outlook: Wells fits in with the Las Vegas Summer League roster as a starter for the Bulls. He has D-League experience and fits as a “tweener” due to his size. At 6’5”, he fits in as a slightly undersized forward, but works well with a smaller lineup. His first game with the Bulls this summer was solid, though unremarkable. He scored exactly zero points, but played over 22 minutes. During the second LVSL game, which he also started, he finally got on the scoreboard. Again, his numbers weren’t impressive, but there is only so much basketball to go around. He did up his shot total from four in the first game to seven in the second game, but couldn’t connect on his 3-point attempts. Which may single a trend instead of an outlier following his poor shooting from deep in the D-League last season.

He probably continues to start for the remainder of the LVSL, and he also probably gets a shot with the Windy City Bulls. However, his play time might continue to drop if he isn’t able to produce at a higher rate on the offensive end of the court with players like Jack Cooley squeezing the frontcourt rotation and the backcourt starting to fill up with the strong performances from Spencer Dinwiddie, Jerian Grant and Denzel Valentine.
