The Chicago Bulls will pick 14th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft after Tuesday’s lottery. With the pick locked in (for now), here’s a look at some of the others who have been picked from that same slot in the draft.
There was no improbable luck this time around for the Bulls in the draft lottery. The last time they entered the lottery as a non-playoff team, they won the rights to Derrick Rose in the 2008 NBA Draft.
On Tuesday night, there were no dramatics and the Bulls were announced first in the order, which means they’ll have the final lottery pick on June 23rd for the 2016 NBA Draft.
The Bulls have picked from that slot in the NBA draft just once:
With the draft just over a month away, we’ll take a look at some of the relevant names that have been picked from that same slot in the last 20 years, including a couple familiar names from before then as well.
No. 14 overall picks since the 1996 NBA Draft (which was a great one):
- 1996: Predrag “Peja” Stojakovic, Sacramento Kings
- 1997: Maurice Taylor, Los Angeles (Clippers)
- 1998: Michael Dickerson, Houston Rockets
- 1999: William Avery, Minnesota Timberwolves
- 2000: Mateen Cleaves, Detroit Pistons
- 2001: Troy Murphy, Golden State Warriors
- 2002: Fred Jones, Indiana Pacers
- 2003: Luke Ridnour, Seattle SuperSonics
- 2004: Kris Humphries, Utah Jazz
- 2005: Rashad McCants, Minnesota Timberwolves
- 2006: Ronnie Brewer, Utah Jazz (That name should sound familiar, right?)
- 2007: Al Thornton, Los Angeles (Clippers)
- 2008: Anthony Randolph, Golden State Warriors
- 2009: Earl Clark, Phoenix Suns
- 2010: Patrick Patterson, Houston Rockets
- 2011: Marcus Morris, Houston Rockets
- 2012: John Henson, Milwaukee Bucks
- 2013: Shabazz Muhammad, Utah Jazz
- 2014: T.J. Warren, Phoenix Suns
- 2015: Cameron Payne, Oklahoma City Thunder
(Bold = Active NBA player)
(Italics = Played in the NBA D-League this past season)
The last six names on the list are relevant role players on their respective rosters now. (Warren, Henson and Payne are still with the teams they were actually drafted by among the active players.)

In terms of the non-active guys, there’s a few familiar names on this list. The list started with Peja Stojakovic, who was a tremendous long-range shooter during his playing days and won a title with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011.
Ronnie Brewer, one of the defensive stoppers on that 62-win Chicago Bulls teams from the 2010-11 season is also on this list.
If you look further down the list of 14th overall picks in the draft all-time, you’ll see names like Dan Majerle (1988) and Tim Hardaway (1989), along with Clyde “The Glide” Drexler going to the Portland Trail Blazers in 1983. (At least they got that first-round pick right, huh?)
The key with this list is to hopefully realize that not many superstars come from this draft spot. Sure, there’s the arguments of “Well, Jimmy Butler was picked 30th” and “Draymond Green was a second-round pick”, but when you look at history from the 14th selection, you don’t see too many superstars in the last two decades.
But, that doesn’t mean that if the Bulls stay in this slot, they won’t get a star. The 2016 draft class isn’t packed with stars, but it’s odd in the sense of the depth.
Next: Bulls will pick 14th overall in 2016 NBA Draft
There’s a weird feeling of good depth in this class and with the Bulls having both of their picks this year (14th and 48th overall), the Bulls could pick up a nice cog for the rotation at 14 and see what’s out there in the second round later.
