We witnessed a sample of the coaching battle that will take place in this series in Game 1. Blatt starting Mike Miller over Tristan Thompson was a huge surprise, and it was a move that did not work in their favor.
As a first year NBA coach, he’s still learning these adjustment-related aspects of the game. The thing is, if Miller had an amazing game, Blatt would have been praised as a genius. Instead, he was forced to get Thompson into the game early to counter the Bulls’ size.
That’s why Thibodeau is such an important piece for the Bulls right now as they work towards winning this championship. He has been on the sidelines for over two decades, mostly as an assistant coach but he still knows what it takes to win a championship in the NBA.
If Thibs can cut the younger guys like Snell and Mirotic some slack and allow Brooks to gain confidence the rest of the way, he’ll be able to preserve his starters and especially Butler & Rose who have become indispensable for this team. He may even keep his job once it’s all over.
Advantage: Tom Thibodeau
