Derrick Rose will speak to the media on Monday for the first time since sustaining his third major knee injury.

Derrick Rose has a history of ruining his public image with ill advised comments in press conferences.Unfortunately, he finds himself in another situation where a careless slip of his tongue can instantaneously further degrade his already questionable public image. With Rose set to speak to the media on Monday, an uneventful press conference is just what the doctor ordered.

According to a tweet by Bulls beat reporter Nick Friedell, Derrick Rose will speak to the media on Monday for the first time since sustaining a right meniscus injury on February 24.

On Tuesday February 24, NBA TV reported that Derrick Rose sustained a tear in his right meniscus. The injury couldn’t be traced to a single instance, rather it likely resulted from wear-and-tear in the knee accumulated over time. The following Friday, Rose underwent a procedure in which doctors removed the damaged part of his meniscus in his right knee. Doctors estimated that a 4-6 week recovery period would be needed before Rose could return to the court and play again.

In a strategic stroke of genius, general manager Gar Forman issued a statement following Rose’s successful knee surgery reiterating the organization’s expectation for Rose to return in the allotted 4-6 week time period.

"“This is an injury that’s fairly common with NBA players or pro athletes. A majority or most are able to come back … and it really doesn’t have any effect on their career. In a small percentage of cases, maybe late in their career, they will complain of some pain in regard to arthritis. But at this point, that shouldn’t be any concern at all.”"

By issuing this statement, Forman blatantly emphasizes the expectations for Rose’s return this time around.  Barring a major setback, Derrick Rose must return in the 4-6 weeks or he is going to make a fool of himself once again.

For the first time in his career, Rose is being held accountable by a significant deadline. Rose’s performance in his press conference will determine how well he is handling the pressure associated with having a deadline for his return this time around.

Although is may seem insignificant, Derrick Rose’s media session today is vitally important for his public image. He can’t afford to screw up and make himself look foolish. In the past, Rose has proven incapable of providing suitable answers to questions regarding his injury. The Bulls need to sit him down with a public relations professional and force him to memorize a series of monotonous scripted answers that cover responses for the questions that he is most likely to be asked.

Rose is tied down by the 4-6 week deadline. If he chooses to disregard this time table and work at his own pace, he opens himself to well-deserved criticism. During today’s press conference, Rose can’t afford to suggest that there is any possibility that he won’t meet his deadline.

In the past, Derrick Rose has made some massive public relations blunders.

Following an ACL tear during the 2012 playoffs, Rose worsened the situation by repeatedly leading on fans by vaguely suggesting that a return during the 2012-2013 season could be imminent….maybe. Later that year, reports leaked that Rose still was refusing to play despite being medically cleared by doctors to return to the court.
