Brothers Will Never Tip Off Against Each Other in All-Star Game Again

You all know this is impossibly rare, right? Brothers have only been selected to an All-Star game in the same year once before, and you get bonus points if you knew about identical twins Tom Van Arsdale and Dick Van Arsdale being named reserves in the early 1970s. Those two apparently contemplated switching jerseys at halftime, which would have been freaking hilarious, but the Gasol brothers could not pull that off considering how different each looks. They were named starters by the fans earlier this year and will both tipoff the game at center. That has never even come close to happening before. Unbelievable. Obviously, they have some good genetics, but it takes a bit more than just that to find yourself starting in an All-Star game.

Pau Gasol is a player many fans have known about for years because of his championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant. Marc Gasol, on the other hand, took a more circuitous path towards NBA stardom.

I wonder what will go through their minds before they take the opening tipoff: Will they scowl? Will they smile?

My vote is for the latter. The brothers famously do not make eye contact during games when they can help it, but it would be fitting to take a moment and smile at each other for how long and beautiful a journey it has been for both of them.

This is Pau’s fifth NBA All-Star Game and only Marc’s second, however, they both seem to have a lot of quality seasons left in them. Maybe Pau has a few less. The brothers have done most of their interviews in Spanish this weekend, which must have made it seem a lot like their summers playing for the National Team. Pau admitted in English recently that his All-Star experience has been quite one-of-a-kind this time around.

"“For sure. A hundred percent,” Gasol said to Chicago Sun Times on Saturday. “That’s what made it so special and so different and unique. It’s something that rarely happens. It’s never happened in the past. That’s why we’re so excited, delighted, honored and thankful. It’s a sweet, nice moment to experience. I think all the compliments and the attention are nice, so we’re appreciative to the media that covers this event and covers our story and shares it.”"

Well, I’d like to share this tale with the world because of how unique it is, and I’m predicting we will never see this again in an All-Star game. Granted, never is a long time, but basically I am guessing that either the world will end in a zombie apocalypse or the NBA will change names before we ever see two brothers start at center against each other again. Enjoy it folks, because we are witnessing history.
