Bulls Summer League Day 2: Flat Performance Against Toronto

81. 81. Final. 66. 24

After a dominant showing in their opener of the Las Vegas Summer League, the Chicago Bulls were rather flat in their second showing in Vegas against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday.

All it took was 24 hours for the Chicago Bulls summer league roster to look like a bunch of inexperienced rookies and young guys thrown together on a team coached by a first-year head coach.

Doug McDermott missed eight of 13 shot attempts, while the star from Saturday’s win, Bobby Portis, missed nine of his 10 shot attempts in a 81-66 Bulls loss to the Toronto Raptors.

The rest of the Bulls roster wasn’t much better, as the Bulls shot 22-for-70 from the field (31.4%) and committed 14 turnovers in the 15-point loss.

Not only did the Bulls shot just above 30 percent from the field, they missed 21(!) of their 24 three-point attempts.

Despite the poor performance, McDermott was vocal in how new head coach Fred Hoiberg‘s offense is something that the roster, along with himself, are grasping. “It feels a little more loose. In (Hoiberg’s) offense, there are a lot of different reads. And you can’t really make a mistake,” McDermott told reporters after Sunday’s loss.

McDermott, along with 2014 second-round pick Cameron Bairstow, led the Bulls with 11 points each against the upstart Raptors bunch.

It’s summer league, so there’s no need to panic whatsoever. Most of the players you’ll see in action for the Bulls are highly doubtful candidates to make the big roster. Sure, you want to see the young guys like McDermott, Portis and Bairstow develop during their time in Vegas, but off nights happen in a long season.

Plus, there’s so much more for the youthful Bulls to learn:

Bulls roster news: Cristiano Felicio signs with Bulls, will attend training camp

Also on Sunday, it was announced that Brazilian big man Cristiano Felicio signed and will attend the Bulls’ upcoming training camp with the main roster.

According to the Chicago Tribune’s K.C. Johnson, it’s unlikely Felicio will make the main roster, as the Bulls have 14 players on the roster (not including Felicio) and they’re projected to be a luxury tax team for the upcoming season.

Felicio (6’10”, 275) is currently on the Bulls LVSL roster, and scored four points, while pulling down five rebounds in Sunday’s loss.

“We’ve been impressed with Cristiano’s work ethic and potential,” said Bulls GM Gar Forman in a release on Bulls.com. “We’re looking forward to working with him and having him come to camp with us this fall.”
