For most fans of the Chicago Bulls, NBA Summer League is the first chance to see 11th pick Matas Buzelis in action.

He hasn’t disappointed, as the rookie had a league-high 28 points in the second game, including a couple of plays that had the arena buzzing.

He threw down a dunk in traffic that was the highlight of the event so far. It comes near the end of this clip:

Summer League is a time of wild overreactions, most of which turn out to be just that.

But the Bulls may have gotten one of the steals of the draft in Buzelis and there are already reasons to be excited.

Matas Buzelis can shoot

We’ll see about this one.

After going 0-4 from long range in the first game, Buzelis knocked down 4-of-8 in game two.

This is the kind of inconsistency we’re likely to get from Buzelis as a rookie, but his shot looks clean and he looked confident letting it fly from long range.

This was the biggest question mark about his game coming in, so hopefully he will continue to build confidence in his shot that will carry over to next season.

If he hits 3-point shots, he’s going to be difficult to defend.

Buzelis can create with the ball

Buzelis was able to penetrate off the bounce several times and get himself into good scoring position.

Big wings who can create their own shots are a high priority in the NBA and Buzelis certainly can. The question is whether he can create for teammates as well, as he has had just two assists in two games even though he’s had the ball in his hands a lot.

Matas Buzelis has nice touch around the rim

I was impressed with Buzelis’ ability to score with little floaters and mid-range pull ups, which he did several times on his way to 28 points.

He’s showing the ability to be a 3-level scorer, though he will have to put on some strength to be able to operate in the paint against real NBA competition.

With his ability to hit long-range shots, create off the bounce and finish around the rim, Buzelis should be formidable in the pick-and-roll with Coby White right away.

These are just two Summer League games, and a lot of these players won’t even be on NBA rosters, but Buzelis is answering a lot of questions already and is flashing the high-ceiling ability that the Bulls need.
