Team USA won its 5th straight gold medal at the Paris Olympics, but it wasn’t easy.
The United States had to bring in the heavy hitters in LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, players who likely appeared in the Olympics for the final time.
There will be a transition and possible leadership gap in 2028, when the US will be looking for younger talent to fill the void.
We can assume that players like Jayson Tatum, Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton will be back, along with possibilities like Anthony Davis and Bam Adebayo.
But there will be spots to fill as the US tries to fill its gaps in talent with the next wave of Olympians and there are two Chicago Bulls who could be in contention depending on how things go in the next few seasons.
Coby White
Coby White is the most obvious choice given his age and skill. You probably wouldn’t list him among the top-five young guards in the NBA at this point, but he could get there in an increased role and with continued improvement.
White would have to show that he can deliver catch-and-shoot 3-point shots at a more consistent rate, which is a must-have in Olympic basketball where the 3-point line is shorter.
White could put himself in the conversation along with guys like Tyrese Maxey and Cade Cunningham if he has a strong season.
Ayo Dosunmu
I would list Dosunmu as far more of a longshot to make the Olympic team in 2028, but we would have said that about Derrick White a few years ago and he just won gold with Team USA.
The team always needs unselfish players who can make an impact without shooting the ball, a description that fits Dosunmu, who is a versatile defender who can play several positions.
You need a glue guy who will make the right pass and defend the other team’s best perimeter player without needing a ton of shots. Jrue Holiday will likely be finished in the Olympics, White may be back, but Team USA could turn to Dosunmu if they want another player of that type.
This will be especially true if Dosunmu continues to improve and knock down 3-point shots at a high rate, which could put him in competition with guys like Jalen Williams from OKC and other versatile wing players who can defend.
