The Chicago Bulls are heading into a season with very few expectations attached to it. A playoff push seems unlikely, but there is plenty of room for the Bulls to grow and improve as they begin a new chapter in the organization’s history. However, they also need to worry about the relegation zone of the new draft lottery odds. That’s where Norman Powell comes into play.
Powell is a bona fide bucket. He can get you 20 points every night. That’s where he’ll be valuable to the Bulls. If the Bulls hadn’t signed Powell, it may have been up to Wilson to be their go-to scorer. The guy leading the offense to keep them out of the relegation zone of the lottery. That’s a lot of pressure to put on a rookie.
With Powell in town, he can be the go-to scorer. That way, Wilson can ease into the NBA without all that pressure on him right away.

Wilson is undoubtedly the future of the Bulls. At least, that’s what they want him to be. There’s a reason why they invested the No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft in him.
And at Summer League in Las Vegas, he looked the part. He was an elite scorer who looked like the type of player an organization can build around for years to come.
At some point down the line, the Bulls are absolutely going to want Wilson to take over the reins as the top scorer on the team. Or at least, one of the top scorers on the team.
But Wilson hasn’t even played an NBA game yet. He’s never gone up against real NBA talent in an in-game setting. Expecting him to step in and be a top-scoring option is a lot.
The new lottery odds mean the worst three teams in the league get punished. Instead of getting three Ping-Pong balls, they only get two. That’s a big deal, especially for a team like the Bulls.
Chicago needs to land another top pick in next year’s draft. And to give itself the best chance to do so, it needs to avoid being one of the worst three teams in the league.
Wilson may not be ready to be a leading scorer in the NBA, but Powell already knows what it takes to do that. He was the leading scorer for the Miami Heat just last year.
Bringing him on board will be perfect for what the Bulls are hoping to accomplish next season: Avoid the relegation zone.
