The Chicago Bulls are setting themselves up pretty well heading into next season. They’ve made some shrewd additions, and most importantly, they drafted a guy – Caleb Wilson – who could be the face of the franchise down the line. However, if they want to keep building for the future, trading with the Philadelphia 76ers and landing some of their future picks could be smart after the Jaylen Brown trade.
In the short term, landing Brown will greatly benefit the 76ers. He’s an amazing player, and they could be one of the best teams in the East next year. But he, Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and VJ Edgecombe will all need new contracts after the 2029-30 season.
That could be a messy situation, and if the Sixers don’t bring back all of them, it could affect their ability to win. And at that point, their picks would be very valuable.
Bulls should trade for future 76ers picks
Chicago needs to start planning for the future. Everything is about the future. The Bulls aren’t going to be winning anything anytime soon, so they might as well hedge their bets way, way down the line.
If they were to do that, the Bulls would have to scour the league for teams that they believe aren’t going to be good in a few years. Teams that could fall off. Teams that could be willing to trade their picks.
Philly already traded a bunch of picks to the Boston Celtics in the deal for Brown. They gave up a 2028 first, a 2031 first, and two second-rounders, but they still have some picks to move.
That’s where the Bulls should get involved. If they can get their hands on some Philadelphia firsts past 2030 (so, maybe 2032 or 2033 at this point), they could end up being pretty good.
Again, Brown, Maxey, Edgecombe, and Embiid are all going to need extensions, and they will all kick in during the 2030-31 season. With the new CBA in mind, it seems highly unlikely that the Sixers will be able to re-sign all four of those guys to big-time deals.
Maybe Embiid won’t want a ton of money by then, but even then, it feels doubtful that Philly would want to have three guys on close to max deals past 2030.
So, if the Sixers are left with just two stars at that point, they may not have built out the roster around whichever two they choose. That could make their picks very valuable, especially if the rest of the East improves by then.
The Bulls should try to trade for future Sixers picks.
