The Chicago Bulls are in a perfect position to take on bad salary, and San Antonio Spurs star De’Aaron Fox may have just played himself into trade rumors. If the Spurs want to dump Fox’s salary this summer, the Bulls should inquire about a potential deal so they can rehab Fox’s trade value and flip him at some point in the future.
Fox struggled mightily in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. He struggled a lot throughout the entire postseason (though he was injured). But now, Fox is owed a ton of money over the next four seasons, and the Spurs may not want to pay him so much money when they already have Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle.
So, the Bulls should see if the Spurs want to make a trade.
Bulls could trade for De'Aaron Fox and rehab his value
In Game 5 of the NBA Finals – when the New York Knicks were able to clinch a World Cup victory – Fox was unable to provide the Spurs with enough offense.
He shot a woeful 3-of-15 from the field and 1-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc. But that’s not even the worst part of the situation for the Spurs. The future is.
Over the next four seasons, the Spurs are going to owe Fox over $220 million dollars. In the blink of an eye – and a playoff run – Fox’s contract became one of the worst in the NBA.
That could open up the door for the Bulls, who aren’t exactly in a situation to be competing for championships right now. They could afford to take on some bad money.
And how bad is the money? For the Spurs, it’s not ideal. They have Harper and Castle already. So, they don’t really need to be paying Fox all that money.
But for the Bulls, it’s not that bad. They don’t have a ton of players they need to be paying right now, anyway. So, why not take on Fox’s contract and try to rehab his value?
If Fox plays well in Chicago, then perhaps a contending team (or a fringe contending team) could be willing to trade for him in the coming years.
Perhaps the Spurs don’t want to trade Fox right now. They probably don’t want to overreact to a rough playoff run. But maybe they do.
Chicago should see if the Spurs want to get off the Fox contract this summer, because it could be a good chance for them to get him and flip in in a future season.
