Coby White struggled as the Chicago Bulls' new No. 1 offensive option after Zach LaVine was traded to the Sacramento Kings on Feb. 2. In the 10 games following that deal, White averaged 17.0 points and shot just 39.6 percent from the field.
The 24-year-old was immediately thrust into the spotlight as Chicago's go-to scorer, and opposing defenses treated him as such, game planning to stop the Bulls' logical offensive successor to LaVine.
It was Josh Giddey, in fact, who carried most of the scoring load as White struggled. In that same 10-game stretch, the Australian floor general averaged 19.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 6.6 assists on 51/56/84 shooting splits.
It's safe to say White eventually adjusted to how defenses were playing him, though, based on the recent awards doled out to him over the last two weeks—a pair that put him in rarified Chicago franchise air.
Coby White joins Michael Jordan as only Bulls to win consecutive Eastern Conference Player of the Week Awards
White was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the week of March 10-16 after averaging 27.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in three games. At that point, he had scored 20 or more points in eight straight contests.
Fast forward a week and White was given his second consecutive player of the week honor, increasing his nightly output to 30.3 points on 56/39/85 shooting splits over four games in that span.
Earning the award two weeks in a row makes him the only player in Bulls franchise history to accomplish that feat other than His Airness himself, Michael Jordan.
Last week, White was the only guard in the league to average at least 30.0 points and shoot 50.0 percent or better from the field, per NBA.com. He's now scored 20 points in 13 straight games, including 37 in a win against the Nuggets on March 24. He's scored 35, 36 and 37 points in the Bulls' last three games.
Chicago won all three.
The former UNC standout is averaging a career-high 23.0 ppg this season.
