The Chicago Bulls are in a difficult position. They appeared to be rebuilding when they traded DeMar DeRozan and Alex Caruso this offseason, but the franchise sits tenth in the Eastern Conference. Chicago has found zero traction on a Zach LaVine trade and may choose to push for the postseason with LaVine and Vucevic. No matter their direction, the Bulls should make moves before the Feb. 6 deadline.
There have been plenty of rumors, including for their non-stars. Torrey Craig was mentioned as a piece of a potential Nuggets trade, and his $2.8 million salary is easily acquired by teams over the second tax apron. Expect to hear plenty of chatter on multiple players before the deadline as the Bulls are one of the most interesting teams.
Craig may have had his final chance to prove himself to a contender. He has a sprained ankle that may hold him out beyond the deadline. Here is the latest on his injury and why he may have already played his final game in the Windy City.
Torrey Craig may have already played his last game with the Bulls
The Bulls say the veteran will be re-evaluated in two weeks. There is no guarantee he will return in that timeframe, but fans can expect another update in 14 days.
The trade deadline is just three weeks away, and Craig has not been a consistent part of the rotation this season. He played in three straight games from Dec. 26 to 30, but it was the only time he saw action in consecutive contests.
The 34-year-old has playoff experience and is a plus-shooter and defender. Contenders won’t shy away from adding him if Craig is healthy and ready to contribute.
He has played in just nine contests this season. Craig is clearly not part of the Bulls’ plans. They have depth in the backcourt and should look to move on before the deadline. Whether chasing a postseason berth or trying to improve their draft position, Chicago has no use for Torrey Craig. Even a second-round draft pick would help the Bulls more than the 34-year-old wing.
The chances of him returning from injury and being immediately pushed into the rotation are low. It would take injuries or a blowout to see him on the floor. The Bulls may end up buying Craig out of his contract and letting him join a contender for the playoffs. There would certainly be interest in a veteran wing capable of sinking open shots and defending multiple positions.
The Chicago Bulls have work to do before Feb. 6. They must choose a direction and make moves to reflect it. The Bulls hope to find a Zach LaVine deal but may be stuck with his contract. Fans are hoping for more than just rumors. Only time will tell if they get their wish.
