Chicago native Derrick Rose lived a long-shot basketball dream for a Chicago Bulls fan who also grew up inside the city limits of Chicago: Rose was drafted number one by his hometown NBA team - his Chicago Bulls!
Rose lived his dream with the Bulls for seven seasons, and after retiring from a 15-season NBA career, Rose’s dream was forever memorialized in the rafters of the United Center when the Bulls retired Rose’s number 1 jersey, which Rose wore from 2008 to 2016, during the 2025-26 NBA season.
Dreams, of course, come from the mind, and Rose’s basketball mentality emerged in an interview he gave to Sports Illustrated while Rose was in attendance at his branded flower shop exhibit in Chicago.
Respecting NBA basketball history
In his interview, Rose shared a candid story about his experience filming an iconic commercial with Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant for the NBA 2K video game. According to Rose, Bryant made Rose wait three hours before filming of the commercial would start.
Rose learned of Bryant’s waiting game logic through his agent, a Bulls legend himself - three-time NBA champion B.J. Armstrong - which amounted to teaching Rose an NBA seniority lesson. At the time of the commercial’s filming, Rose was primary accolade was being the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year award winner for the 2008-09 NBA season.
On the other hand, Bryant’s NBA resume that commanded a three-hour wait included being a four-time NBA champion, the 2007-08 NBA Most Valuable Player award, 11-time All-NBA Team selections, 11-time NBA All-Star Game selections, and nine NBA All-Defensive Team selections.
Aside from his commercial filming experience, Rose also shared a stark perspective on his career legacy while also acknowledging the legacies of NBA greats that preceded and exceeded the heights of his career, such as 11-time NBA champion and Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell, along with Russell’s chief NBA nemesis, two-time NBA Champion Wilt Chamberlain.

Rose conveyed, in his interview with Sports Illustrated, retrospective thoughts on his NBA career that echoed a sentiment of consistently giving full effort in all facets of his basketball career, within the game, during practice, or rehabbing from injuries.
The competition in Rose’s NBA played hard with the purpose of outplaying opponents - this was how respect was exchanged in the league.
Rose’s basketball mentality simplified: aggression
While offering high praise for WNBA guard Olivia Miles of the Minnesota Lynx, Rose perfectly encapsulated the bedrock of his basketball mentality through his compliments for Miles’ game.
Rose noted that he’s a fan of Miles' constant offensive attack that obscures whether Miles is playing to score or pass in her offensive possessions.
