Caleb Wilson worked out with LeBron James, and it really doesn’t matter

Let's see Caleb Wilson in a real NBA game before we break out the anointing oil.

Caleb Wilson is undoubtedly a huge source of (justified) optimism for the general future of the Chicago Bulls.

Wilson is the highest NBA lottery pick the Bulls have selected in the draft since (trigger warning) Patrick Williams.  Wilson was also the consummate showman during the summer league Bulls’ stretch of exhibition games in Las Vegas.  Let us also not forget that Caleb has been everywhere in the city of Chicago during the summer of 2026.

In the latest edition of Caleb Wilson’s candid camera, the Bulls rookie shared a post-workout photo of himself and an NBA player you might know…LeBron James Sr.

Who could blame Bulls fans, riding high on the waves of Taj Gibson’s homecoming, for re-upping their good vibes at the optics of Wilson and James “in the lab,” as some people like to say.

Great optics, cool stuff, but it means jack squat.  Nothing, really, absolutely nothing.  For starters, Caleb Wilson’s agent is Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, the same Rich Paul who also represents LeBron James.  NBA players within the same sports agency family typically work out together at some point in their professional careers.

Does a Wilson workout with big Bronny mean he’s destined for MVP trophies, NBA titles, and a podcast where he job-interviews his next NBA head coach?  Heck no!

If Caleb Wilson is going to be a great NBA player, he’s going to be great regardless of who he works out with in the gym.

Confidence and work ethic are what matter

Wilson’s relentless attacking, which he displayed in his first Las Vegas Summer League game against his college archrival Cameron Boozer, is an early indicator of the greatness Caleb Wilson COULD achieve if he’s able to get his game into a consistent state of production by the end of his rookie NBA season.

At the same time, as entertaining as his summer league highlights were, no one really knows what Caleb Wilson’s game looks like in a real NBA setting yet.  As Bulls fans, we need to see the ebbs and flows of Caleb against all the common variables in an NBA season.

Will Caleb quickly graduate to being scouted as a shooter by Bulls opponents when the 2026-27 NBA regular season tips off?  What kind of NBA defender will Wilson look like when he confronts NBA game speed for the first time?  How will he hold up navigating ball screens, and how much will he look like a rookie in help defense?

What will Caleb Wilson’s decision-making look like when the ball is in his hands, and will the Bulls have four other players on the floor that fit with Wilson’s game?

One gym session with one of the most well-known active NBA players isn’t going to give Caleb Wilson some magical power-up that guarantees him an awards landslide at the end of his rookie season.

Instead, Wilson having the mental resiliency to work through rookie challenges and work out real basketball skill growth is what should build his path to NBA greatness.
