Before they made a trade for LaMelo Ball, the Minnesota Timberwolves inquired about a potential deal for Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey. Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic reported as much, also noting that the Wolves checked in with the Boston Celtics about a potential deal for Jaylen Brown.
Right now, the Ball trade concluded, the Bulls should be wishing that they had come to an agreement with the Wolves on a Giddey trade. If they could have gotten even a fraction of what the Charlotte Hornets ended up getting for Ball, it would have been a great deal. One that would have helped Chicago move into the future.
It would have been a chance for the Bulls to reset even more.
Bulls should wish they made Josh Giddey trade with Timberwolves
With Bryson Graham in the driver’s seat, the Bulls are about to enter a new era. An era that should hopefully help the Bulls make it all the way back to the postseason with a new core.
They already selected Caleb Wilson with the No. 4 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Then, with the 15th pick, they took a chance on Dailyn Swain, adding another young piece.
Chicago also made a big-swing trade, effectively getting big man Nicolas Claxton for free. He’ll give them a temporary body down low. A defensive presence and pick-and-roll threat.
Giddey could very well be part of the Bulls’ next few years, but if they want to build around Wilson and Matas Buzelis, it could be smart for Chicago to consider trading the guard for a leader who better fits today’s NBA.
The Bulls guard isn’t a good three-point shooter, nor is he a plus on the defensive end. Those two things alone could make it hard for the Bulls to win with him at the highest level.
So, if the Bulls were able to get some of the compensation that the Wolves gave up for Ball, then they would have been in a pretty good spot moving forward.
Obviously, the Bulls wouldn’t have been able to get the same package. They may not have even been able to pry Naz Reid away from the Wolves. But maybe they could have gotten some of the picks.
It would have to depend on how desperate the Wolves were to shake things up. If they were desperate enough, could Minnesota have potentially coughed up a couple of the same firsts or swaps it gave Charlotte?
That would have been a sweet deal for the Bulls.
