The Chicago Bulls have a clear-cut path forward, and it revolves around Caleb Wilson. He’s going to be a focal point for them right away, and Norman Powell’s scoring will slot in nicely alongside him, taking some of the immediate pressure away. But don’t forget about Matas Buzelis. He and Wilson are a team. It’s not a one-man show.
There’s been a ton of hype surrounding Wilson, especially after his impressive showing in Las Vegas during Summer League. But he’s not the Bulls’ only interesting prospect. Buzelis has all the talent to become a star, too. Chicago has two top dogs brewing, but one is soaking up all the spotlight right now.
Buzelis’ scoring could take another leap next year, and all of a sudden, Chicago may have one of the most promising young duos in the NBA.
Bulls should be more excited about Matas Buzelis, not just Caleb Wilson
Wilson is an absolute freak. From the moment the Bulls drafted him, it was clear that he had all the tools to be the future face of the franchise. He’s just that good on both ends of the court.
The defense was painfully obvious in college. He was a beast at North Carolina. He scored well, too, but Vegas really put that part of his game on the map. He was a bucket during Summer League.
Yet all of the hype around Wilson has muted the excitement about Buzelis. It’s not going to be a one-man army in Chicago. The Bulls have two bright, young stars to get amped about heading into next year.
Buzelis is still only 21 years old. He has great size for the forward position, and he and Wilson should be the small forward and power forward in Chicago for years to come.
Last year – his sophomore season – Buzelis enjoyed an impressive leap, especially in the scoring department. He doubled his points average from his rookie season, and though the three-point efficiency dipped a bit, it was still solid.
If Buzelis can go from a 16 PPG guy to closer to 20 PPG, then the Bulls will be in a great spot. And that sort of leap is definitely possible, especially with how much more talent he’ll be playing alongside now.
Powell, Wilson, and even Nicolas Claxton will help take some of the defensive pressure off Buzelis, opening up more room for him to operate as a go-to scorer.
Bulls fans need to be excited about their young duo. Not just Wilson, but Buzelis, too.
