3 free agent centers that would fit better with Bulls than Nikola Vucevic
1. Brook Lopez
Although Poeltl may be the best long-term fit available in free agency, the best player available right now is Milwaukee’s Brook Lopez. Seemingly defying the laws of nature, Lopez just continues to get better and better with time, coming off arguably the most impactful season of his career at 34 years old.
Long gone are the days of Brook being a low-post scoring machine like he was back in Brooklyn a decade ago, but he has since adapted to the modern NBA arguably better than any other player in the league. After completing just three 3-point attempts in his first eight years in the league, Lopez knocked down 136 triples last season alone, at an impressive clip of 37.4%.
Pursuing Brook Lopez may be the Bulls’ only route to dramatically improve at the center spot this summer
Reducing Lopez’s ability to adapt to nothing more than an increase in shooting percentage would be incredibly reductive, however, as he’s made an even more impressive development as a defender. Although Jrue Holiday and Giannis Antetokounmpo are often given the credit for Milwaukee’s stunning team defense, it wasn’t until this past season that Lopez received his dues as he finished second in a closely-contested Defensive Player of the Year race.
His value to this current Bucks team is hard to quantify, but they most certainly would not have reached their championship ceiling without him. Whether or not Lopez would even entertain the thought of joining the Bulls is hard to say, but if the front office is truly committed to winning now, it would be foolish to not at least pick up the phone and give Lopez a call.
