The Bulls absolutely must avoid running the same core back next season

In a perfect world where injuries don’t exist, I have no doubt this Bulls team could be fairly dangerous and compete for a top-four seed in the East if they ironed out the kinks. Unfortunately, this isn’t a perfect world, and Lonzo Ball is unlikely to ever be the player he once was for Chicago before his contract expires. This team’s window for contention slammed shut the very second Lonzo’s knee gave out.

The sooner the front office accepts that reality, the better. Ripping the band-aid off now will only serve to get this team moving in the right direction sooner. The Big 3 of Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Vucevic are all undeniably very talented, but the chemistry here isn’t a recipe for a championship.

The Bulls must put their promising young talent in positions to succeed. Patrick Williams, Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu, and Dalen Terry have already sacrificed so much to entertain this experiment, and it’s time to bring it to an end. Heavy.com’s Sean Deveny indicates that the team may be ready to retool around LaVine this summer.

With a front office that seems conflicted on whether or not to rebuild in a new direction or commit to a senseless pursuit of a championship, we can only hope the more sensible voices prevail. If the Bulls run the same starting five out there again next year, it will only be a futile attempt that has wasted even more of the loyal fanbase’s time.
