Imagine a Chicago Bulls team consisting of DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Anthony Davis. Some may believe that can’t happen but the truth is it can very well become a reality. With two years left on Davis’s contract and a player option for the third, he can very well be in a Bulls uniform sooner than you think.
With the news of LeBron James tying himself to the Lakers for at least another two years, it’s likely Davis plays the rest of his contract out alongside James. Fortunately for the Bulls, it seems after those two years, there may be nothing that keeps Davis in a Lakers uniform. If Davis were to hit free agency it seems like a no-brainer for him to choose his hometown team.
Davis has already come out publicly stating how we would love to play for the red and black. In 2019, in an interview with NBC Sports Bulls insider, K.C. Johnson, Davis stated this about potentially playing for the Bulls one day:
"“I mean, this is definitely hometown, if the opportunity ever presents itself and when that time comes, I’d definitely consider it”"
That opportunity will begin to present itself in the coming years. Davis also voiced how he wanted to be a symbol for kids in Chicago, showing them that they could be just like him.
Here is a video of Anthony Davis expressing his love for the city of Chicago.
Why should the Chicago Bulls make a run at Anthony Davis?
The answer to that question is pretty simple. With Anthony Davis and some of the pieces that the Bulls already have, they will be automatic contenders for an NBA championship. Being that it is likely that the Bulls would only be able to obtain Davis from Free Agency. The Bulls would not have to sacrifice too much of their core nucleus to acquire the NBA Champion.
Of course, some players may have to make a sacrifice and take a pay cut but for the price of an NBA championship that is more than worth it. If I’m the Bulls I am going to do everything in my power to try and hold my core together for the next two years, regardless of how the seasons go.
Gearing up for the potential addition of Anthony Davis should be the long-term plan. Some may argue that he has injury concerns but the risk is worth it when an NBA championship is involved. I mean look at the Lakers, with a healthy AD they dominated the Western Conference and gained an NBA championship out of it.
If you’ve somehow forgotten, here’s a reminder of just what a healthy Anthony Davis looks like.
It’s evident that a healthy Anthony Davis is still a top 10 — if not top 5 — talent in the NBA. If you are the Bulls’ front office, what reason is good enough for you to not take the chance and make a run at a perennial talent? The Chicago Bulls have lacked a true superstar talent since pre-injury Derrick Rose, but adding Anthony Davis could prove to be the dynamic move this team needs to eventually get over the hill.
