3 point guards Bulls need to target in offseason to back up Lonzo Ball
1. Jalen Brunson
The Dallas Mavericks are having a special year due to the reliability of their role players. It’s obvious that Luka Doncic is a special player, but the shot making of the role players has allowed Dallas to finish in the top four in the Western Conference.
The main role player that has raised his game is Jalen Brunson. Last season, he was one of the best sixth men in the league, serving as the perfect complement to their stars in the closing minutes. This year, he has flipped between sixth man and starter — thriving on and off ball. He has stepped up as one of Dallas’ main defenders, taking on the other team’s best ball-handler.
In games where he starts (32) he’s averaging 18 points, six assists and four rebounds on 50% shooting from the field. While he is only 6-foot-1, he is scoring 41% of his points in the paint and shoots 59% in the paint. He’s extremely crafty and is an elite passer.
He has no problem creating for role players, as that’s the entire Dallas offense. They run a four-out-one-in offense that pushes their “one-in” to the perimeter. The guards looks to get downhill and kick out to a jump shooter.
The Bulls run a traditional four-out-one-in offense, looking to score inside-out. Brunson thrives getting into the lane and finding open players, whether it’s on the wing or perimeter. He would be able to make Williams look like an offensive threat, while playing off-ball in any unit with Ball.
He’s the best backup point guard in the NBA and would be the best insurance for Ball, as he has a mix of veteran presence and youth. Will the Bulls be able to afford him? We’re not sure, but it all depends on how their cap situation shakes out with LaVine and Vucevuc.
