Predicting next buyout addition for Chicago Bulls after Tristan Thompson: DJ Augustin

Among the veteran players available on free agency at this point of the season is the 34-year-old former Texas Longhorns point guard DJ Augustin. After getting waived by the Houston Rockets on Feb. 10, Augustin became one of the more experienced guards available in free agency for any postseason contenders that could use backcourt help to pursue.

And there is certainly still some value that Augustin could bring to the table down the stretch this season for a team needing a veteran reserve guard.

While the Bulls might not be the first landing spot that comes to mind when thinking about potential destinations for Augustin in the near future, this fit still makes sense. The Bulls are still going to be missing some of their key guards due to injury heading into early March. Augustin can help take some of the burdens in the backcourt unit off the likes of rookie point guard Ayo Dosunmu, third-year point guard Coby White, etc.

Meanwhile, Augustin can give the Bulls another true primary facilitator and capable ball-handler to rely on coming off the bench in the second or third unit. He’s a good floor spacer that can help the Bulls take some of that burden off Coby. Augustin is better than a 40 percent shooter from beyond the arc so far this season.

If the Bulls were to make the move to sign Augustin anytime soon, it would likely come at the expense of waiving sharpshooting guard Matt Thomas. But the Bulls would be getting a more versatile and experienced guard out of Augustin that has a lot more postseason games under his belt for his career.
