Ayo Dosunmu proving to be one of the top rookie facilitators
In a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on the night of Feb. 12 in the back end of back-to-back games, the Chicago Bulls saw rookie point guard Ayo Dosunmu come up with yet another solid two-way performance. In their win over the Thunder at home at the United Center on Feb. 12, Dosunmu gave the Bulls a dozen points, eight rebounds, nine assists, one steal, no blocks, and three turnovers.
And Dosunmu shot an efficient 5-of-8 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc in this Feb. 12 win over the Thunder.
Moreover, Dosunmu is putting up some very solid numbers for the Bulls in the last couple of months. Since Jan. 15, Dosunmu has had four games with double-digit assists. And he has nine games with at least eight assists in that same span of time.
So far this season, Dosunmu is one of only three rookies that have at least three games with double-digit assists. The other two are the Thunder rookie guard Josh Giddey and the Detroit Pistons point guard Cade Cunningham.
Giddey and Cunningham both do have more individual games this season with a double-digit number of assists. But Dosunmu also has the most games with a double-digit number of assists since Jan. 15.
Chicago Bulls’ rookie Ayo Dosunmu one of the top facilitators in his draft class
The numbers are really proving that Dosunmu is one of the top facilitators in this rookie class. He’s stepping it up when second-year head coach Billy Donovan and the Bulls need him to the most. While point guards Alex Caruso and Lonzo Ball have missed the last few weeks at least for the Bulls, Dosunmu is taking his game to a new level.
Since Jan. 15, Dosunmu is averaging around 11 points per game, four rebounds, seven assists, one steal, and 0.5 blocks, while shooting a solid 52 percent from the field and 42 percent from beyond the arc.
Some of the numbers Dosunmu put up in the last month or so are truly impressive. He’s starting to become one of the most notable playmakers for the Bulls as the team continues to battle through this stretch without the tremendous two-way point guard duo of Caruso and Lonzo.
Dosunmu’s assist numbers since Jan. 15 also show that the is the best rookie facilitator around the entire NBA in the last month. It’s rare that you get a rookie second-round draft pick that registers an assist percentage around 16.
Dosunmu is just one of six rookies this season has an assist percentage north of 14. Giddey and Cunningham are also part of that group of six rookies.
All in all, though, what the Bulls are getting out of Dosunmu of late is nothing short of spectacular. He is proving that he is capable of occupying a role in the starting unit when needed. And he’s showing to be a true facilitator and playmaker that can get it done with the best of them in this rookie class.
Following their six-point win over the Thunder on Feb. 12, the Bulls are sporting a record of 36-21. Next up for Dosunmu and the Bulls is a meeting with the San Antonio Spurs at home at the United Center on Feb. 12.
