Guards the Chicago Bulls can target to add depth at the deadline: Jevon Carter
There is a focal point on this list on the fact that if the Bulls add a guard to bring more depth to the backcourt unit at the trade deadline, it should be to get a solid defender. Joseph is an aware defender, albeit he is pretty small. And Okogie is definitely a quality defensive two-guard that the Bulls could go after at the trade deadline.
But if executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley truly wanted to go after a gritty and stout defensive guard at the trade deadline, the former West Virginia Mountaineers standout two-way point guard Jevon Carter is an option to look into. Carter isn’t getting much playing time at all coming off the bench for the Brooklyn Nets so far this season.
After putting together a solid two-season run with the Phoenix Suns prior to the start of the current regular season, Carter hit a wall in his first year with the Nets. He’s just not getting much of a role and looks like a poor fit with their rotation under head coach Steve Nash.
But Carter was a very effective on-ball defender during his two seasons with the Suns, and he was a quality floor spacer. He shot around 40 percent from beyond the arc in his two seasons with the Suns. He was even around a 37 percent shooter from beyond the arc in his first three seasons in the NBA. The run with the Nets this season just isn’t going his way.
Carter has two years remaining on his current contract. But the remainder of his current contract only amounts to around $6 million in total through the end of the 2022-23 season. The Bulls really could pick up Carter at little to no cost to them to get a defensive boost in the backcourt unit.
