Young Chicago Bulls players standing out of late: Coby White

A very pleasant surprise for the Bulls in the last month or so is the play of third-year point guard Coby White. On a tear of late, Coby looks like he’s really finding his rhythm at the right time.

It still looks like the Bulls are going to try and utilize Coby as one of their trade chips around the deadline as it approaches next month. But if White does stick around with the Bulls beyond the trade deadline, that should be something that the fans aren’t disappointed about.

Coby has truly proved that his value to the second unit will be hard to match in terms of his volume scoring ability. He’s also improving his defense lately and becoming a more active threat off-ball.

All of these developments in Coby’s game are a testament to his resiliency and progression since the start of last season. He didn’t have any sort of consistent role with the Bulls in his first few seasons in the NBA. And there was little patience that the current coaching staff had with him in the starting unit at the outset of last season.

Yet, the last few weeks saw Coby really shine when the Bulls needed him to the most. He’s now scored in the double figures (mostly coming off the bench) in 11 straight games and 12 out of his last 13. And in eight games played in January thus far, Coby has averaged around 17 points per game, two rebounds, three assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks while shooting 56 percent from the field, 45 percent from beyond the arc, and 92 percent from the free-throw line.

Coby has to be considered one of the most valuable reserves for the Bulls through the first half of the regular season.
