Who the Chicago Bulls could’ve signed instead of Malcolm Hill: Kris Dunn

If the Bulls were looking for someone who could fill the role of a very capable perimeter/wing defender, then a good option would’ve been the former Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies defensive standout guard Kris Dunn. As someone who really didn’t get a shot with any team this season during all of the COVID-19-related issues and absences around the NBA in the last month, Dunn has to be itching to get his shot.

It was not all that long ago that Dunn was one of the best defenders on a Bulls team where he played nearly half his minutes at the two or the three. The last season that Dunn played with the Bulls was back during the 2019-20 campaign. During that season, Dunn registered a stellar career-high 3.1 defensive box plus/minus.

Dunn is definitely not going to be a versatile offensive weapon if the Bulls were to ever sign him again. But his defensive stopper ability allows him to fill a role that most other guards in free agency right now just couldn’t. He could be a switchable and effective defender that can guard most players between the one and the three.

This would be the type of signing that would not come with long-term intentions for the Bulls. But it really is hard to find a better fit among the free agents currently available to fill the void left by the likes of Green and Caruso as a standout perimeter/wing defender than Dunn. This signing would make a lot of sense.
