Free agents that would’ve made the Chicago Bulls worse than they are now: Dennis Schroder

I don’t know how many times I’ve mentioned the fact that it would be a bad idea (at the time and in hindsight) for the Bulls to go after the former Los Angeles Lakers and current Boston Celtics point guard Dennis Schroder. Last offseason, it looked like the Bulls were targeting Schroder to be their starting point guard.

With so many other options out there in free agency, it just didn’t make much sense to most Bulls fans for the front office to go out and sign Schroder. If White and Dosunmu weren’t in this rotation, then it might be worth giving a volume-scoring bucket-getter such as Schroder a look for the second unit.

But that is about the only role that should be considered when looking at a point guard like Schroder as it relates to his fit with this Bulls team as it is currently constructed.

If the Bulls were going to pursue a point guard in free agency last offseason that wasn’t Lonzo, I was personally a fan of the idea of going after someone like the Utah Jazz veteran Mike Conley or Washington Wizards standout Spencer Dinwiddie ahead of Schroder. Even point guards such as Reggie Jackson and Derrick Rose looked more appealing in certain ways than Schroder.

Schroder is having an up and down run with the Celtics this season. He’s looking to prove that he belongs as a starter in the NBA in essentially a one-year prove-it deal with the Celtics. If he does close out this season strong, Schroder could get more money next offseason.
