Underrated Chicago Bulls players nearing the halfway mark: Devon Dotson

The one Bulls player on this list that I would consider to be underrated but really isn’t getting much of a chance to prove himself at all is the second-year former Kansas Jayhawks point guard Devon Dotson. This former undrafted free agent signing and the two-way contracted guard has played well when given the chance in the last two seasons.

But the problem is that he’s just not getting many minutes in this rotation. That was the case even when this team was really short-handed in the last few weeks due to COVID-19-related issues and the league’s health and safety protocol.

Where Dotson has proved a point this season is with the G-League affiliate Windy City Bulls. Dotson has taken over as one of the best and most productive players for the G-League Bulls so far this season. And he’s still played pretty well in the limited minutes he did get in the NBA with the Bulls.

In nine games played in the G-League this season, Dotson has averaged around 20 points per game, seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and one block. His shooting percentages are also doing pretty well this season. Granted, his two-point percentage and free-throw percentages have dipped in the G-League this season.

Nonetheless, it seems like Dotson has fallen victim to the upgraded guard depth that the Bulls brought into the mix last offseason. Dotson looks to be behind the likes of rookie point guard Ayo Dosunmu, third-year point guard Coby White, and even sharpshooting guard Matt Thomas at times this season.

The way that Dotson has played for the Bulls in his limited minutes in the NBA in the last two seasons, combined with some obvious progressions in the G-League this year, should make for an elevated role before too long I would think.
